Ascension of the Lord and First Communion
Reflection by Karen Rowe
Today, we celebrate Ascension Sunday, and for some in our parish, it is also the sacred day of First Holy Communion. These two moments — one from the life of Christ, one from the life of His Church — are deeply connected. The Ascension is not about Jesus leaving us physically, but Him being present with us every day. Jesus sends down the Holy Spirit to help us and guide us as we live the Gospel. In the Eucharist, that promise becomes tangible. The same Jesus who ascended into heaven is the Jesus who comes to us under the appearance of bread and wine. Heaven and earth meet at the altar.
For our First Communicants, today is a personal Pentecost — a moment when the Lord comes to dwell within you in a new and intimate way. You are now able to receive Christ. As we say, Amen, Yes, We Believe, we are invited by Jesus to let Him live in us, to guide us, and strengthen us. We are to always live in the Light.
Today, heaven rejoices twice: once for the glory of Christ’s Ascension, and again for the joy of children receiving Him for the first time. The same Jesus who reigns in heaven now reigns in your heart.
Congratulations to all who will be receiving the Eucharist for the first time this weekend and next. May God bless you and your families.
